Frequently Asked Questions
Are you a fiduciary 100% of the time?
Yes. I act as a fiduciary at all times, which means your best interest always come first - no exceptions. You’ll get advice that’s objective, transparent, and aligned with your goals, not driven by commissions or sales.
Do you sell insurance?
No, I don’t sell insurance - and I don’t receive referral fees either. I give advice and I manage investments. When insurance or other products and services such as a mortgage, tax filing, or an estate attorney, are part of our recommendations, I can connect you with trusted professionals who shares my philosophy: educate first, recommend only what’s truly needed, and never push a product. You’ll get expert guidance without pressure so you can make information decisions that serve your goals. You are also free to use your own professionals and I would be happy to coordinate with them.
Do you work with people who aren’t in the military?
Absolutely! While I specialize in working with military professionals, I also serve others whose paths may look different. For example, every military couple is a team - and each partner brings a unique career journey.
I continue to work with service members and their families beyond active duty. Transitioning out of the military presents a powerful opportunity to maximize your earned benefits, to dream BIG, and design a life that fits your values and goals.
How do you get paid?
I am a fee-only advisor, which means that I am only paid by my clients - not by product sales, commissions, or referral fees. Depending on your needs, I am paid through one or a combination of:
Hourly or project work fees
Ongoing financial planning fees
Investment management fees
Do I have to be local to work with you?
Not at all. As a military family, we know that moving is practically guaranteed — which is why Formynder Wealth Management, LLC is 100% remote and built to support you wherever you are.
That said, if you’re ever close to Fredericksburg, VA and would like to meet in person — whether at a coffee shop, your home, or somewhere else — we’d be happy to make that happen.
What makes you different from other financial planning firms?
We start with what matters most to you — this is not just about your money. It’s about your goals, values, and vision for life after the military. From there, we build a personalized plan to help you get where you want to go, with clarity and confidence.
It’s not about chasing the highest return — it’s about designing a life that feels right and using your financial resources to support it.
What is an AUM offset?
An AUM offset is a way to make sure you're not overpaying as your investments grow. When I manage your investments, I charge an AUM (Assets Under Management) fee based on the size of your portfolio. At the same time, when you're just getting started and your investments are still growing, I also charge a financial planning fee to cover the full scope of services we provide.
For newer investors, as your investments increase over time, the AUM fee begins to “offset” or reduce your financial planning fee. Eventually, once your portfolio reaches a certain size, the AUM fee can fully cover the cost of your planning services—and your separate financial planning fee is offset to $0.
For those with larger investment portfolios, it is quite possible that the financial planning fee could be offset completely from the start of your service contract.
I evaluate and adjust as necessary, the AUM offset upon your initial investment management service and then again every year on your agreement anniversary. While I do not decrease the AUM offset for market volatility, I may decrease the offset if you distribute funds from your investments and your AUM fee no longer covers the financial planning fee outlined in your service agreement.
This structure ensures you receive the same level of support throughout your journey, while your fees stay consistent and fair.
If your fee needs to change in any way, nothing changes until I talk to you.

What is “Formynder”?
Pronounced “for-men-der“, it is Norwegian for “Guardian” or “Trustee”. A Formynder operates as a source of protection and responsibility, ensuring the best interests of the person they are appointed to support.
The use of the Nordic word itself draws on my ancestorial heritage as a 4th generation American, whose ancestors immigrated to America beginning in 1856. “Guardian” also happens to be the callsign of my first assigned unit in the Marine Corps.
